Knowledge is power. Having the right information in the right form enables us to make better decisions. Real estate investors need to understand how resilient cities are to megatrends in society – and this index helps them do precisely that.

The European Thematic Cities Index (TCI) from Swiss Life Asset Managers is a sophisticated, customisable tool for institutional investors. It seeks to answer a question that is central to building a resilient portfolio: which cities are best aligned to thematic structural change?

The TCI is purely data-driven. It combines 49 attributes across five areas – known as the 5Cs:

  • Change & Disruption
  • Climate & Environment
  • Communities & Clustering
  • Consumers & Lifestyle
  • Connectivity

Together, they provide insights into how equipped cities are to cope with demographic shifts, globalisation, climate change, digitalisation and more – all of which are fundamentally altering the way we live, work and play.

By tweaking these themes’ weightings and drilling down into the data, users can understand the specific qualities of 137 cities across the continent. And while the top rankings were led by familiar names (London, Paris and Amsterdam), the TCI also captures smaller cities such as Grenoble and Granada.

Understanding cities’ merits and challenges makes fully informed investment decisions possible.
